It is often said that the human factor is the weakest link in anti-counterfeiting - and that is not surprising as a similar situation exists in all security areas. Current anti-counterfeit technologies are becoming so advanced that imitation of the latest generation of protection elements can be almost impossible. However, even the best protection elements are useless if there is no one primed to examine them thoroughly. That means inspectors need to pay sufficient attention and be well trained. After all, there are case studies of frauds that include accepting counterfeit documents with completely missing security elements.
Human factors, therefore, play a critical role as long as the inspection process is not fully automated. But discussing the human factor is much easier than taking it into account when building a protection strategy, and it is increasingly an issue.

Optaglio has founded a psychological laboratory focused on behavioural aspects of authentication processes and document inspection. The new laboratory will be based in Lochovice, Czech Republic. The new laboratory, which includes graduate psychologists, is equipped with appliances such as eye cameras and environment simulators. Its aim is to improve the understanding of different groups of people in identifying security features when subjected to differerent environment and emotional states such as stress, tiredness and changes in the motivation etc.
In addition, experiments will also be undertaken across the globe to help further understand other aspects and influencing factors.

There have recently been several crimes committed by criminals impersonating policemen in the Czech Republic. In one particularly serious case, a young woman was kidnapped by a group of men with fake police badges, why others have involved the theft of money and products. Just recently, a crime ring of fake environmental inspectors was convicted. The Czech Republic is no exceptional country in this respect, as can be seen from news reports in other countries. In Cheltenham, UK, a man impersonating a policeman stole 6 000 pounds from an old lady while in the state of Texas another fake policeman has committed series of burglaries. And there is an uncountable number of such cases in third world countries.
Fake policemen often do not wear uniforms, which makes sense because walking in uniform may be risky and the criminal can always claim to be undercover.

This new forensic measure allows law enforcement experts to identify genuineness of documents destroyed by water, fire, acids, At the same time, it retains all existing benefits of microholograms, such as covering three levels of inspection (visible, hidden, forensic) with a single tool.
Optaglio has manufactured microholograms since 2010 and had innovated them step by step during these years. This technology is now accepted as a de facto industry standard for multilevel protection of documents.

This new forensic measure allows law enforcement experts to identify genuineness of documents destroyed by water, fire, acids etc. At the same time, it retains all existing benefits of microholograms, such as covering three levels of inspection (visible, hidden, forensic) with a single tool.
New special microholograms are resistant against water, press, abrasion, mechanic stress generally, heat, frost, radiation and some chemicals, such as xylene, petrol, acetone, toluene and some acids. The lifetime of 10 years with keeping full resistance is guaranteed, but Optaglio researchers claim the real operating live will be much longer.

Optaglio has recently announced a solution to prevent the alteration of paper documents and has also declared that 10 million pharmaceutical packets were protected in Q4 of 2017 using microholograms. In a separate announcement, the company also revealed that a key milestone in its hologram mathematic simulation project has been met to help design smarter holograms.
